Tactics for Yogg-Saron 10/25 for WoW 3.3.5a: three phases (Sarah, brain room, naked Yogg), Sanity, tentacles, Gaze of the Madman, Guardians of Ulduar and the “Alone in the Darkness” hardmode, forging Val'anyr, full loot.

Review

Yogg-Saron is the Old God at the heart of Ulduar, the final mandatory boss and one of the hardest encounters in the game. The battle is unique due to the mechanics of Sanity: each player has a scale of 100, which is consumed by shadow effects; at zero, the player is forever under the control of Yogg-Saron (effective death). Three phases: first fight with the illusion of Sarah; Yogg's body then rises in a ring of tentacles, and part of the raid dives into the portals into his Mind to expose the Brain; finally naked Yogg with Madman's Glare and Immortal Guardians. Along the perimeter of the hall there are four Guardians (Freya, Hodir, Thorim, Mimiron) - as many as you activate before the pool, the raid will receive as much help. Killing with fewer Guardians is hardmode; zero Guardians = "Alone in the Dark", the pinnacle of Ulduar. This is where the legend is forged: shards of Val'anyr are thrown into Yogg's mouth as he roars deafeningly.

General tips
  • Sanity is the main resource. It melts from the Ring of Darkness, Mental illness, Similar thinking, The look of a madman. At zero, the player is permanently enslaved by Yogg. Stand in the Wells of Sanity (given by Guardian Freya) and minimize your view of the shadow castes.
  • Phase 1: Beat Sarah, deal with the Guardians of Yogg-Saron and the Ring of Darkness. Don't rush - entering phase 2 starts the main meat grinder.
  • Phase 2: Three types of tentacles. Crushing (holds the tank, smashing frontally), Strangling (Squeezing grabs the player - kill the tentacle to free), Vicious (Curse of Doom - dispel, 20,000 darkness after 12 sec).
  • Phase 2: Part of the raid dives into the portals into Yogg's Mind and slashes the illusion tentacles to expose the Brain. Bringing everyone to the point of insanity drives everyone out - have time to get out, otherwise - 100% Sanity.
  • A similar mindset binds the two players: stay closer than 20m to each other, otherwise both will lose HP and Sanity. Mental illness frightens and jumps on neighbors - run away, do not dispel blindly.
  • Death Ray - Moving beam across the floor in phase 2: don't stand in the way. Hodir (Guardian) gives a Protective Gaze that saves from him.
  • Phase 3: Don't look at Yogg during Madman's Glare (turn away the camera) - otherwise -2% Sanity/sec. Shadow Beacon summons the Immortal Guardian; You can only kill him under Thorim's Titanic Storm (Keeper).
  • Hardmode is a CHOICE before the pool: how many Guardians NOT to activate. Each inactive Guardian removes his support and increases the reward. Zero Guardians = "Alone in the Dark."

Combat phases

Phase 1 Phase 1 - Sarah Pool (illusion of Sarah in the center)

In the center stands Sara, an illusion created by Yogg. She showers the raid with shadow magic: Sara's Grace/Blessing/Wrath on random players,Ring of Darkness (AoE) and Dark Volley. Periodically summonsGuardians of Yogg-Saron — adds that need to be killed. Range stretched fromRings of Darkness. When Sarah gains strength, she transforms and Yogg-Saron's body rises - phase 2 begins.

  • Beat Sarah, kill Guardians
  • Stretch fromRings of Darkness
  • ProtectSanity
  • Preparing for Phase 2
Phase 2 Phase 2 - Yogg-Saron and the Chamber of the Mind Sarah's transformation

Yogg's body is in the center in a ring of tentacles. Crushing tentacles (the tank keeps its muzzle away from the raid, Smashing is a powerful frontal blow), Choking (Squeeze grabs the player, 6000 physical / 2 sec - chop the tentacle) and Vicious (Curse of Doom, Apathy, Black Plague). Yogg castsRing of Darkness, Mental illness, Similar thinking andDeath ray. Part of the raid dives into the portals into Yogg's Mind and slashes the illusion tentacles, revealing the Brain of Yogg-Saron; Driven to insanity drives everyone out of the Mind. When the Brain is finished off - phase 3.

  • 3 types of tentacles, each in its own way
  • Portals to the Mind → hack the Brain
  • Exit beforeDrive to insanity
  • Similar thinking <20 m, run away fromMental illness
  • Leave withDeath Ray
Phase 3 Phase 3 - Yogg-Saron naked Yogg-Saron's brain is finished off

Yogg opens up for direct damage. The look of a madman burnsSanity from everyone who looks at him (turn away the camera). Deafening Roar, Drain Life andShadow Beacon Summoning Immortal Guardians, which strengthen Yogg (Strengthening). The Immortal Guardian can only be killed under Thorim's Titanic Storm. Race: finish off Yogg beforeSanity the raid did not deplete and the 15-minute enrage did not trigger (All Life Fade).

  • Don't look duringThe look of a madman
  • Kill Immortal Guardians (under Titanic Storm)
  • HoldSanity in Freya's Wells
  • Enrage Race
Phase 4 Hardmode - Guardians of Ulduar / "Alone in the Dark" Activate less than 4 Guardians before pool

There are four Guardians around the perimeter. Each activated one gives the raid help: Freya - Wellssanity (regenSanity); Hodir - Protective Gaze (saves fromDeath Ray and lossesSanity); Thorim - Titanic Storm (allows you to kill Immortal Guardians in phase 3); Mimiron - Destabilizing Matrix (increases damage / dampens tentacles). The fewer Guardians are active, the more difficult the battle and the richer the reward. Zero Guardians - Alone in the Darkness, the pinnacle of Ulduar difficulty.

  • Each Guardian = separate help
  • Without Thorim it is impossible to kill the Immortal Guardians
  • Without Freya there is no regen-Sanity
  • 0 Guardians = maximum hardmode and loot

Abilities

Sanity
Other F.1
Each player has a scale of 100 units. Melts away from shadow effects (Ring of Darkness, Mental Illness, Similar Thinking, Madman's Look, Drive to Insanity). At zero, the mind is forever under the control of Yogg-Saron.
Action: Stand in the Wells of Sanity (Guardian Freya), do not look at the shadow castes, minimize your stay in the shadow zones. Lose all Sanity = become a raid enemy.
Sarah's Zeal
Raid damage F.1
Phase 1. Sarah applies buffs/debuffs to random players: Grace and Blessing strengthen/heal, Wrath hits with shadow magic.
Action: Play as intended by the raid lead; Sarah's wrath - just survive with a chill. The main objective of phase 1 is to take down Sara and clear out the Guardians.
Ring of Darkness
Raid damage F.1
Phases 1–2. Indiscriminately causes dark magic damage to everyone within a 15m radius (and reduces Sanity).
Action: Range and heals are spread out so as not to catch the Ring in a bunch. This is one of the main sources of Sanity loss - stay in Freya's Wells.
Summon Guardian
add F.1
Phase 1. Sarah summons adds that hit the raid with a Dark Volley and reduce Sanity.
Action: Keep them on the tank and kill them quickly. Range by priority so that the Dark Volley does not accumulate damage and loss of Sanity.
Breaking
Tank F.2
Phase 2: Crushing tentacles hit the tank with a powerful frontal attack.
Action: The tank holds the Crushing Tentacle facing away from the raid, turning away from the frontal attack. Keep your defensive CD under a series of attacks.
Extrusion
Raid damage F.2
Phase 2: Choking Tentacle grabs the nearest player and squeezes the life out of them: 6000 physical damage every ~2 sec.
Action: As soon as someone is grabbed, all the damage goes to that tentacle to free the captive. The healers hold the captured one in the top until the tentacle dies.
Curse of Doom
Raid damage F.2
Phase 2. Vicious tentacles curse the player: after 12 sec - 20,000 damage with dark magic (plus Apathy, Black Plague, Debilitating Poison).
Action: Dispel Curse of Doom before triggering. Vicious tentacles are the priority of the range, they crap with debuffs throughout the raid.
Mental illness
Raid damage F.2
Phase 2. For the player: 5000 darkness + fear for 4 sec, reduces Sanity by 3% and jumps to the nearest ally within a 10 m radius (including when trying to dispel).
Action: Run up so that fear does not jump onto your neighbor. Don’t dispel blindly - removing it also reverses the effect. Just survive 4 seconds away from the raid.
Similar thinking
Raid damage F.2
Phase 2. Links two players: if they are further than 20 m from each other - 3000 darkness and -2% Sanity once every 1 sec to both.
Action: The bonded pair immediately moves closer together and stays within 20m until the effect wears off (30sec). Agree on the meeting area in advance.
Death Ray Warning Visual
Raid damage F.2
Phase 2. A beam slowly moving across the floor, causing fatal damage to those standing in its path.
Action: Follow the trajectory and move away from the beam line. Hodir's protective gaze (Guardian) saves from him - if Hodir is active.
Driven to insanity
Raid damage F.2
Room of the Mind (phase 2). Cast ~1 min: drives everyone who is still inside the Mind crazy, reducing Sanity by 100% (instant enslavement).
Action: Those diving into the portals cut down the illusion tentacles, expose the Brain and MUST leave the Mind until the end of the cast. Stayed inside - lost all Sanity.
The look of a madman
Raid damage F.3
Phase 3: Laughing Skull: Anyone who LOOKS at Yogg gets 1750 darkness and -2% Sanity every 1 sec.
Action: Turn the camera/character away from Yogg for the duration of the Madman's Gaze. This is the main drain of Sanity of phase 3 - you can’t miss it.
Shadow Beacon
add F.3
Phase 3: Yogg tags the player with Shadow Beacon and summons an Immortal Guardian, which buffs Yogg (Boost). The Guardian can only be killed under the aura of Thorim's Titanic Storm.
Action: Drag the Immortal Guardian into the Titanic Storm zone of Thorim (Guardian) and kill him there. Without Thorim, the Guardians cannot be killed - only weakened, and Yogg accumulates Strengthening.
Into the womb of the ancient god
Other F.3
When 30 shards of Val'anyr are collected, they are thrown into the mouth of Yogg-Saron while he roars deafeningly (Deafening Roar), and the legendary hammer is forged within the physical shell of Yogg.
Action: The bearer of the fragments uses the ability in the roar window. This is part of the creation chain of Val'anyr, Hammer of Ancient Kings - the only legendary of Ulduar.
Keeper Active
Other F.4 HC
Hardmode mechanics. Four Guardians around the perimeter: Freya (Wells of Sanity), Hodir (Protective Gaze from Death Ray), Thorim (Titanic Storm - kill Immortal Guardians), Mimiron (Destabilizing Matrix). The less activated before the pool, the more difficult the battle and the better the loot. Zero Guardians = "Alone in the Dark."
Action: For a clean kill, activate all four. For hardmode, disable one at a time; remember: without Thorim you cannot kill the Immortal Guardians, without Freya there is no regen-Sanity - this changes the entire battle plan.
Life Selection
Berserk F.3
Hard Enrage: After about 15 minutes, Yogg-Saron casts All Life Drain, instantly killing the entire raid.
Action: The battle should take ~15 minutes. With fewer Guardians and Immortal Guardians, the phase 3 DPS window is shrinking - don't delay it.

Positioning

Yogg stands in the center of the hall. Phase 1 - range/healing is extended from the Ring of Darkness. Phase 2 - tanks keep the tentacles in a ring, raid between the tentacles and Freya's Wells of Sanity; part of the raid dives into the portals of the Mind in cycles. Phase 3 - raid around naked Yogg, everyone turns away to the Madman's Gaze, Immortal Guardians are dragged into Thorim's Titanic Storm.

🛡 Tank
At least two tanks: one holds the body/Crushing Tentacles facing away from the raid (Front Breaking), the second holds the adds and Immortal Guardians. Crushing tentacles hit hard - defensive CDs in rotation. In phase 3, the tank keeps the Guardians in the Titanic Storm zone.
✨ Healer
A lot of raid shadow damage + prisoners of the Choking Tentacles (6000/2sec). Keep an eye on Sanity as the raid's second HP bar. Avoid the Madman's Gaze and Death Ray. Save your mana - the battle is long.
⚔DD
Tentacle priorities: Vicious (debuffs) and Smothering (prisoner) forward, Crushing according to the situation. Those diving into the Mind cut down the illusion tentacles and emerge in time. Phase 3 - Burst on Yogg between the Glances of the Madman, Kill the Immortal Guardians only under the Titanic Storm.

Role Tips

🛡 Tips for the tank
  • Keep the crushing tentacle facing away from the raid - the breaking is frontal and very painful.
  • The second tank picks up the Immortal Guardians in phase 3 and keeps them in Thorim's Titanic Storm.
  • Keep your defensive CDs on rotation - there is a lot of raid and tank damage.
  • Watch yourSanity too: at zero the tank becomes an enemy of the raid.
✨ Tips for healer
  • Sanity raid is the second HP bar: drive people into Freya’s Wells, don’t let them look at the shadow castes.
  • A prisoner of the Strangling Tentacle loses 6000/2sec - keep him in the top until the tentacle is killed.
  • Don't treat from underDeath Ray and don't look atThe look of a madman.
  • The fight is long - save your mana, plan the CD for peak shadow damage.
⚔ DD Tips
  • Vicious and Strangling Tentacles are a priority; Dispel the curse of doom before it triggers.
  • Those diving into the Mind slash the illusion tentacles and MUST come out beforeDrive to insanity.
  • Similar thinking - stay 20 m from the bound person; Mental illness get away from the raid, don't dispel blindly.
  • Phase 3 - Turn away toThe look of a madman; Only defeat the immortal guards under Thorim's Titanic Storm.
  • Hardmode “Alone in the Dark” - take into account the absence of help from the Guardians in advance, the entire battle plan changes.
